Kyiv is a city with a very rich history behind it. Being one of the city’s three historical nuclei, the area of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is beyond doubt, one of the places where history has had the strongest impact on the built environment. The design proposal for the site masterplan aims to reflect upon the multiplicity of “historical layers” that made the area what it is today, but also to make them present and visible. The design approach also aims to anchor the proposed buildings with some of the most important buildings and structures present on the area - the Ramparts, the Bell Tower and the Old Arsenal Building.
As for the contemporary art museum, its mass follows two grids that are rotated against each other. All facades are covered with white marble stone which further fosters the appearance of a “white cube” exhibition building. The building seeks to frame the art it displays, acting as a befitting space to present modern artwork of many kinds. In total, the museum has four storey housing all basic and public functions, with the storgae and restoration facilities located underground.
